Be our friends

From the archive, first published Thursday 1st Sep 2005.

THE MAYOR of Kinsale is calling on Barry Town Council to reconsider its decision to scrap plans for a friendship pact between the two communities.

Barry Town Council decided not to pursue a relationship with Kinsale back in June 2005, after toying with the idea for almost ten years.

But Kinsale Mayor, Tomas O Brien, believes the towns should be linked because of their shared history.

He said: "Many a young Kinsale man left to go to Barry, which to them was the gateway to the world.

"For some it was the first time they had left their native town, and their families survived on the money they sent home.

"Some settled in Barry and have families there today. Many others died in the wars while serving in both the Royal and Merchant Navies."
