50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 17, 1955:

* Mr Harold Prince, who succeeds Mr E W Lugg as the Corporation's chief collector in April, has been with the local authority for 23 years.

* Gareth Neale, a member of the Barry Harriers Club, who is now in the services, gained his first Army medal on Wednesday week when running as a member of the Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School's team in the North-Western Cross Country Championships.

* The need for urgent action to secure improved technical education facilities in Barry was stressed in a leading article in the Barry & District News on December 9.

* Mr D G Lloyd of Barry, has been successful in passing the intermediate examination of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries in December.

25 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of February 21, 1980:

* Judith Gee was the talk of Barry last week after she hit a five-roll total of 43 in a match in the Fourth Division of the Barry & District Ladies' Skittle League, setting an individual record for both men and women's leagues in the town.

* A Barry police officer, Sergeant Richard Sterio, is due to leave tomorrow for Rhodesia to assist at polling stations during the forthcoming elections.

* Income from the Barry Memorial Hall in January was 528, less than half the figure for the same month the previous year.

* Following recent storm damage the Vale Council is to carry out urgent repair work in the sum of 3,591.30 to the felt roof at Leckwith House, Gibbonsdown.
